5 Reasons To Consider Osteopathic Treatment for Baby Colic

Written By Unknown on Friday, October 2, 2015 | 5:01 AM

All babies cry. They do so when they are hungry or teething or simply not feeling well. Colicky babies cry at the same sort of prompts - except they also do it when there seem to be absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, colicky babies can cry - and loudly - for up to three hours at a time several times a week. While babies cry on average for 2.5 hours in any 24-hour period, colicky babies often look uncomfortable while crying.

While doctors still do not know exactly why some babies suffer from colic and some do not, it is thought to be due to an immature digestive system and sometimes their developing nervous system.

What all medical professionals will tell you is that colicky babies do not become colicky toddlers and certain not colicky adults. It does end. But exhausted parents want an end to it sooner than later, and often seek out medical help to see if it can actually be curtailed.

One way to go might be to consider osteopathic treatment.

Here are five reasons why that might be a good idea:

1. Osteopathy is a form of drug-free, non-invasive manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework. This includes the joints, muscles and spine. The aim of osteopathic treatment is to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Cranial Osteopathy includes the physiology of the cranium and its inter-relationship with the body as a whole.

2. Osteopathy treatment would encourage the release of tension and stresses in the body and the head that might have been caused by the birth. Osteopath doctors hold and observe the baby, carefully manipulating the body to encourage it to function as it should.

3. Osteopaths look to recognize any effects caused by stress and pressure, particularly at the base of the skull where nerves to the tongue and guts may become irritated and effect sucking and cause nausea. Doctors are able to build up pressure around the Temporal bone which houses the hearing apparatus and the Eustachian tubs which may be compressed during delivery and lead to blocked ears and infection.

4. Diagnosis and treatment often involve the gut, where parents are taught techniques to help the baby empty their bowels; the diaphragm and rib cage, which often gets distorted during delivery (techniques can balance the rib cage); and the head, neck and mouth. Doctors say gently release restrictions in the neck and around the tongue allowing the baby to suckle more easily bringing in less wind.

5. Osteopathic treatment is gentle and babies will often be relaxed after treatment and sleep. Feeding may become easier if there is a latching problem and mothers will be taught some specific techniques for feeding their baby. Doctors insist that most babies can be treated well with osteopathic treatment or a combination of medication and osteopathy.

Remember to check with your doctor before taking any treatment or medical remedy.
