These symptoms could be due to conjunctivitis or possibly due to a blocked tear duct.
Tears are made in glands called the lacrimal glands which are up in the outer part of the eye socket. They run across the eyeball and are drained away by a duct which leads to the nose. Babies are often born with a duct that is not fully open so the tears are unable to drain away.
In nearly all cases the duct is open by the age of two and in many cases by the age of one. In the meantime your baby's eye may be very watery and more prone to conjunctivitis.
Treatment is usually with the same antibiotic drops that we use for conjunctivitis. In addition it may help to massage the lacrimal sac, which is part of the drainage system, on a regular basis. Your doctor can show you how to do this.
The majority of blocked tear ducts get better by themselves. Those cases which don't get better can usually be treated by a small operation in which a new channel is made into the nose. This is called "probing" and is usually done under general anaesthetic when your child is older.
