The Essentials of Baby Care

Written By Unknown on Saturday, September 5, 2015 | 12:31 AM

Motherhood is a gift that is bestowed on by nature. Some are natural mothers while others need to put extra effort and work on their baby care skills. But irrespective of whether you are a natural or not, you will face baby care problems at some point in time and it is only either your experience or other mothers' experiences that might get you through. The bottom line or the main aim is to do the right thing for your baby as much as possible. Your baby is like a blank slate in the beginning. Gradually, he/she forms his/her own personality based on the way you bring him/her up.

Summer Baby or Winter Baby?

It is very important to handle your baby according to the time of the year he/she is born. For instance winter babies require more careful handling as well as warm clothes. On the other hand, summer babies require lesser clothing and good room ventilation. During winters it is best to have a humidifier in your baby's room to prevent dryness and dehydration from setting in.

Touch, comfort and safety

Your baby has a heightened sense of touch since his/her other senses are not so developed. So it is very important to hold your baby close to you (more specifically close to your heart), since all the nine months in your womb your baby has constantly been listening to your heart beat. So hearing your heart beat again outside will only comfort your baby. Bring about an overall sense of security by choosing the right dresses, swaddle blankets and other accessories for your dear baby.

Hygiene matters

Your baby's umbilical cord dries up and falls off within a week of birth. It is highly essential to apply an antiseptic lotion right after your baby's bath for about 2-3 weeks. While bathing your baby, always hold the baby in an upward slant with the baby's head held high. After that, hold the baby under the armpits and wipe baby's back. Do not keep your baby's diaper on for more than 8 hours.

Feeding and burping in the right position

They usually need to be fed every 2-3 hours. Your child will always give you the signs as to what it needs. If you are bottle feeding your baby, the make sure you hold your baby's head neck and head in an upward slant. Be careful of not choking your baby and make sure no liquid gets to your child's lungs.

They are a joy to watch and hold. The intense love and affection that a mother has for her baby cannot be equaled to any other and thus must be channeled to take good care of her child.
