Cod liver oil: nature’s most potent superfood?

Written By Unknown on Friday, January 15, 2016 | 12:28 AM

In general I think we should try to meet most of our nutrient needs by eating fresh foods.

After all, that’s the the way humans are adapted to absorbing nutrients.  Isolated, synthetic nutrients don’t have the same effect on our bodies, because most nutrients require co-factors and enzymes to be properly absorbed and activated.  These are not often present in supplements.

Cod liver oil is a notable exception.  In fact, even though most people think of it as a supplement, it’s more accurate to refer to it as a food – or perhaps “superfood”.

In particular, I recommend that all men and women trying to get pregnant, and all women that are pregnant and breastfeeding, take fermented cod liver oil (sold by Green Pastures – I have no affiliation with them).

Why cod liver oil?

It has large amounts of pre-formed vitamin A (retinol).  Vitamin A plays several crucial roles in reproductive health.  It promotes full-term pregnancy,  proper development of the face, kidneys and lungs and prevents prolonged labor, deafness and internal organ displacement – among other things.  As I mentioned in a previous article Why You Can’t Get Vitamin A From Vegetables, animal foods like liver and cod liver oil are the only significant sources of vitamin A in the diet.

It has more vitamin D per unit weight than any other common food.  Vitamin D is another important nutrient for fertility and pregnancy that up to 50% of women are deficient in.  Vitamin D promotes proper development of the bones, especially in the 3rd trimester when the fetal skeleton begins to grow rapidly.  It also plays a role in the development of the lungs, and protects newborns from tetany, convulsions and heart failure.

It has vitamin E, vitamin K2 (mk-7 form) and various quinones.  These fat-soluble vitamins are important to health and, in the case of K2 especially, aren’t commonly found in foods.

It has healthy amounts of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA & DHA.  DHA is particularly important for fertility (both male and female) and pregnancy.  DHA is preferentially incorporated into the rapidly developing brain during pregnancy and the first two years of infancy, concentrating in the grey matter and the eyes.  It’s also crucial to the formation of neurons – the functional cells of the brain – and to protecting the brain from oxidative damage.

Why do I specifically recommend Green Pastures fermented cod liver oil?

It is cold-processed through fermentation.  This is important because processing with heat (which is what almost all other brands do) can damage the fragile long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which in turn makes them potentially harmful to ingest.

It contains naturally occurring fat-soluble vitamins.  Most companies bleach and deodorize the cod liver oil in processing it, and before they do that, they have to remove the naturally occurring vitamins to prevent them from becoming damaged.  Then they add the vitamins back in afterward – except that when they do, they add back synthetic vitamins instead of the naturally occurring ones.

I recommend a dose of between 5 mL to 10 mL per day for women trying to get pregnant or who are already pregnant or breastfeeding, and a dose of 5 mL per day for men.

Written By Unknown on Saturday, October 10, 2015 | 2:38 AM

Baby Food for 4 Month Baby

A four month old baby has a very delicate stomach. His diet should be maintained in a way that it does not cause any harm to his health. Here are a few suggestions for baby food for 4 month old baby.

Your baby does not need to feed often as he reaches four months. His stomach grows bigger by this age and he tends to develop feeding habits that are more like adults. Despite less feeding, he will still gain weight. He may attempt to snatch the food off others' plates. Though he may be unable to chew, due to lack of teeth, he will lick it to test its taste. Parents often mistake this gesture of the baby and encourage him to eat more of the solid food. Parents should keep in mind that baby food for 4 month baby is very different from what we adults eat.

Feeding Your Four Month Old Baby

Whether or not, a four old month baby is capable of having food other than breast-fed milk or baby formula, depends on the health of the baby. If the baby has not experienced any stomach related problems till four months, he can start having solid or semi-solid food in his diet. Generally, smashed food is fed to the baby, as he can swallow it without chewing. Pastes and liquid food can be included in the baby food diet. However, it is advised that nothing spicy or oily should be tried.

First and foremost, whatever you feed the baby, make sure to follow a strict timetable for his meals. By this, you are setting a routine for the baby's appetite from an early age.

Before starting any solid food, consult your doctor and get a baby food specifications chart done for him.

Maintain a balance in the baby food diet and in the amount of nutrients, so that your baby neither lacks any nutrients nor gets an overdose of any one nutrient.

If you are feeding a new solid food item to the baby, feed him only 3-4 spoons initially. If he can digest that item without vomiting it out or without causing any stomach disturbance, you may continue with that food.

Make sure the baby is sitting while you're feeding him. A four month baby can be held in the lap or can sit in a baby chair, with some support. Sitting position will help him digest his food faster and better.

Use a small spoon to feed the baby and feed him tiny morsels.

If the food is warm, you should taste it before feeding it to him, to avoid burning the baby's mouth.

Maintain a happy and playful environment during the meal.

Do not make the baby lie down immediately after the meal.

Make the baby taste a new food item during his meal time, before he drinks his milk so that the baby is not very tired or hungry.

Homemade baby food is more safe, however, if you are feeding canned food to the baby, check the expiry date as well as the ingredients and avoid food containing 'added salt' or 'added sugar'.

Do not feed directly from the jar. Remove a small amount of food on a clean dish and place it in front of the baby. This may encourage the baby to finish the meal since he is watching the others at the table finishing their own dishes.

Introducing Your Four Month Old Baby to Semi-Solid Food

Cereals: Cereals like rice, barley, oats etc. can be given to the baby in paste form or mixed with the water of legume porridge. You can also try to feed him rice or oats cereal mixed with breast milk, water or formula.

Fruits: Apples, bananas, pears, avocado are the fruits that can be given to the baby. Banana can be smashed easily, however, apples, pears and avocado has to be processed in the food processor along with milk, to make milkshakes of the fruits. Preferably, filter the shakes too so that no big pieces of the fruits are accidentally fed to the baby.

Vegetables: Potato or parsnip, cauliflower, carrot, acorn squash, sweet potato, green peas, broccoli, butternut squash. Boil these vegetables and smash them to make a soft paste. Do not add any spices, salt or sugar to it.

Development of a Four Month Old Baby

After four months, your baby is going to be curious towards his environment. Anything new and different will excite him. Colors and patterns are more going to occupy his attention. He will try to get up and roll over his side to satisfy his curiosity about what's going on around him. At this stage, sitting with the help of support and bearing weight on legs is commonly seen in babies. Encourage your baby to say different sounds in this month. Your baby can imagine and looks forward to old stimuli if you make him get used to it. Try to limit the use of pacifier and slowly decrease the baby's dependence on it in the months to come. Give the baby a rattle or other toys which make sound and watch him get amazed and happy while playing with it. While playing, the baby will stretch arms and legs which will help him to develop vital muscles in the body. Don't get surprised if your baby tends to grab anything that is within his reach. He is just trying to understand the world around him by touching the different textures of various objects.

At four months of age, your baby's sleep pattern will be more on a schedule than before. He will probably sleep for eight to nine hours at night with or without breaks. Even during the day, his naps will be on track and you might get some shuteye yourself. New sounds, toys or games will easily make him sound out squeals of laughter or rumbling belly laughs. Please remember that every baby grows at his/her pace. Consult a pediatrician if you are worried about anything silly or grave matter concerning your baby.

Crying is the only way for a four month old baby to indicate that his stomach is upset. Generally, many mothers prefer to give Gripe Water to their babies after meals to prevent these stomach problems. Gripe water is a European remedy that always works for gas problems or any other stomach related irregularities. Gripe water is nothing but herbs-fortified water. These herbs are proven to help calm the stomach and even the intestines. For a baby aged 4 months, one teaspoon of Gripe water, 2-3 times a day is recommended. If the baby continues to feel distressed, it is better to consult the baby's doctor immediately. Also, take measures to feed your baby the most balanced and healthy baby food which is suitable for his age. These food will make him strong and stimulate essential growth at the proper rate.

Good Baby Finger Foods

Most children are ready for finger feeding by the time they are 9 months old. Finger foods for babies involve food items that are soft, mushy and easy to swallow.

Babies can be introduced to finger foods whenever they are ready for it. The time to introduce finger foods varies from one baby to another. Most babies are ready for finger foods at around 8-10 months.

By this time, they have developed fine motor skills, and will try and grab food off the plate. Their 'pincer grip', involving grasping objects with the thumb and index finger, will enable them to pick up tiny food items, and feed themselves. At this stage babies love experimenting with different food textures. The food most of the time won't enter the mouth. However, finger feeding should be encouraged as it facilitates hand-to-mouth coordination.

Ideally, the foods that come under the 'finger foods' category are those which can be picked up easily, and mashed between the baby's gums. To introduce baby finger foods, one can simply place the finger food on an unbreakable plate or onto the baby's high chair tray. It is advisable to feed the baby in a high chair, as it reduces the risk of choking. While introducing finger foods, introduce them one at a time, and then gradually add new items as well. The baby should be offered a variety of textures and colors to touch, smell and feel. There are various kinds of baby finger foods that one can offer the baby. If the baby shows some dislike towards a particular type of baby food, then try giving the same food after a couple of weeks. Babies' tastes change all the time, and they might find it yummy later on.

Good Baby Finger Foods

Good baby finger foods are those which can be made into tiny soft bits which dissolve or melt easily in the mouth. Fruits, vegetables, meat and cheese that make lovely baby finger foods are as follows:

Vegetable Finger Foods:Vegetables make good finger foods, however, they have to be cooked soft, peeled and de-seeded before giving them to the baby. Soft-baked sweet potato and white potato dices make good baby finger foods. Then small dices of soft-cooked carrots, peas, green beans, broccoli are also great finger foods for a 9 month old baby. Acorn squash or small bits of baked butternut is also great!

Fruit Finger Foods:Small dices of melon, ripe banana, ripe pears and avocado form perfect baby finger foods. To reduce the slippery texture of the fruit, one can roll the fruit in oatmeal or powdered cereal. Tiny bits of ripe mango, squished blueberries, dices of soft-baked peaches and kiwi are also good for babies.

Meat and Dairy Finger Foods: Soft-cooked pasta, scrambled egg yolks and small bits of soft cheese can be given as finger foods. Moreover, small dices and shreds of soft-cooked fish, chicken, turkey or beef are great when mixed with the baby's favorite puree. Tofu cubes can be coated with cereal powder, diced into tiny cubes and given to the baby.

Baby Finger Food Recipes

Some of the simple baby finger recipes that can be tried out are as follows:

Banana Pancakes:

Ingredients: Ripe bananas (2) and pancake batter

Preparation: Make thin slices of the bananas and coat them with pancake batter. Next, lightly fry them in a pan until golden brown. The pancake is ready!

Sweet Potato Fries:

Ingredients: Large sweet potatoes (6) and olive oil

Preparation: Scrub, clean, peel and cut the sweet potato into small strips. Preheat the oven to 400° F.

Into a bowl, add ¼ cup of olive oil, cinnamon, ginger and a pinch of brown sugar. Add the potato pieces into the oil mixture, and allow them to get drenched in the oil. Toss these oil-drenched pieces onto the baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes (until tender). After baking, the potato pieces will have a crispy outer layer, while the inner portion remains mushy.

As the baby grows into a toddler, one can introduce small bite-sized food items of whatever one is eating. One should ensure that the food is easy to handle, and does not present a choking hazard. It is advisable not to introduce finger foods to babies who haven't started sitting without support. To avoid the risk of choking, it is best to wait till the baby is able to sit without support. Baby finger foods must be soft enough to divide into small pieces, and easy to swallow for the baby.

Baby Food Diet

Baby food diet doesn't always mean a diet for babies. It can be consumed by adults too. Understand what it is all about through the article below.

Baby food diet is the latest terminology for describing the "tiny sized, small meals" meant for babies, which are consumed by adults today. It is the latest fad in Hollywood. Instead of having one or two heavy meals, you can substitute it with smaller meals at frequent intervals. Baby foods are normally nutrient packed and purer. It's gluten free and rich in vitamins. People are nowadays sticking to this plan to lose weight and maintain a healthy life. The following content will let you know the details.

For Weight Loss

Consuming baby food is more of a craze than reality. It is low in calories and is nutritious, and can form a part of your meal. This is a healthy alternative for meals rich in calories and can help you shed your extra fat. Cereals, grains paste, processed food, milk powder, wheat recipes, and fruits paste form the major portion of this plan. If you choose to include these meals, you are bound to lose weight. They have very low calories and are healthy.

For example, by eating a bowl of cereal for lunch or breakfast, you can cut down your calorie intake to 50%. A sandwich or burger with vegetables, butter, and mayo has 500 to 700 calories. A high fiber or protein rich meal will help you stay full till longer time. Make sure you do not skip your breakfast or lunch for regular metabolism.

For Adults

Adults can supplement their meals by taking three to four jars of baby food and eat during lunch and breakfast. A normal adult should have meals at least thrice a day. But when you replace your meals with this meal plan, the calorie content reduces. So what you can do is, start consuming two or three small jars of ravioli, barley, or wheat with carrots, sweet potatoes, applesauce, or smashed pineapple.

All these items if taken together will have 200 to 300 calories.

After reading the above paragraphs, you must be wondering if it really works! The answer is, it does work to some extent, though not completely. However, it has some advantages and disadvantages too.

The toddler's diet can kill your hunger while keeping the calorie count low. Organic baby food, fruit sauce, and cereal pastes are good for adults. The jars are easy to store and easy to carry in your bags.

The disadvantages are that, there are no medical guidelines for adults consuming this food.

Sometimes, the recipe is bland without additional sugar, spices, or salt. It's very unappealing for the taste buds of adults. The texture is dull, and there's little or no chewing. Swallowing food despite having a set of good teeth sometimes makes no sense for adults.

The Verdict

The final answer is that this meal regimen cannot make up for all the nutritional requirement of adults. You can include it in your diet, but it's better not to "exchange" it with your regular food. If you wanna lose weight, better try to cut down calories and exercise regularly, rather depending completely on such a diet. It's sometimes very monotonous as well. The biggest advantage is that, it doesn't cause any health hazard. Being low in sodium, it is good for people with high blood pressure.

The only option that will work is, supplement it with at least one adult size meal everyday. Try banana paste, milk porridge, or pudding at breakfast. Have chicken, country vegetables, or other fish jar with some juice in lunch, and try liquid potato, chicken stew, or vegetable soup with a bowl of cereal for dinner. Apart from all these, drink 2 liters of water daily.

So what do you feel? Are you ready to live on this plan? Personally, I would recommend not to make it regular, just it as a part of your everyday meals. Your taste buds have matured and let them tickle with the varieties of adult food items. Only remember, low cals!

Essential Nutrients Your Baby Needs to Grow

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 | 5:13 AM

Nutrients are the building blocks for the healthy growth of the baby. Babies need to be given nutrients in appropriate amounts to prevent a deficiency and the possible health problems emerging out of it.
This Buzzle article enlists the 4 essential nutrients your baby needs during his growing years.

Essential nutrients for baby growth

Iron for Brain Development

Almost 75% of brain development takes place in the first year after birth, and iron is the vital nutrient that helps in brain development.

We all are aware about the nutrition given to a pregnant woman to help her give birth to a healthy baby. The physician or a nutritionist recommends a diet that ensures she is getting all the vital nutrients in the correct amount. However, it is equally important to focus on nutrition when the baby is born and he is capable of ingesting food on his own. For the first 6 months, the baby gets all the essential nutrients through breast milk, but after that, when it is time for semi-solid or solid foods, the nutrient content of the food should be observed carefully.

The rapidly developing organs and systems of a newborn include the brain, eyes, and the immune system. The nutrients in the food are responsible for their rapid growth and development. In this Buzzle article, we have provided a list of vital nutrients your infant needs while growing. Try to include them in your little one's daily diet.

Key Nutrients for Babies

Calcium

For kids and adults alike, calcium is the most important nutrient because it prevents brittleness in bones, which further leads to osteoporosis. A sufficient amount of calcium in the body helps infants acquire a considerable amount of bone density and develop strong bones. This prevents bone injuries when kids start with their rigorous physical activities like running around the house, climbing up and down the stairs, or even playing sports.

Required Amount: During the first year, breast milk and formula are capable of satisfying the calcium requirements of the baby. Later on, the infant needs approximately 500 milligrams of calcium per day.

Vitamins

Vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K are also major contributors to your baby's healthy growth and development.

Vitamin A is essential for the formation and maintenance of healthy hair, skin, mucus membranes, proper vision, healthy immune system, and reproductive system.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 0.4 milligrams Retinol Active Equivalent/day

7-12 months - 0.5 milligrams Retinol Active Equivalent/day

Vitamin D contributes by helping the body to utilize the calcium and phosphorus consumed through the food.

Required Amount: 0.005 milligrams/day

Vitamin K is responsible for proper functioning of the blood clotting process in the body.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 0.002 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 0.0025 milligrams/day

Vitamin E performs the important function of preventing breakdown of the tissues, and protecting vitamin A and fatty acids in the body.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 4 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 5 milligrams/day

Vitamin C is one nutrient that performs multiple functions like, healing wounds, forming collagen (protein) that gives structure to the bones, muscles, cartilage, and blood vessels, helps the body resist infections, and enhances the absorption of iron.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 40 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 50 milligrams/day

Vitamin B12 is essential for proper functioning of the nervous system, and maintaining healthy blood cells.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 0.0004 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 0.0005 milligrams/day

Vitamin B6 helps the body protein to build up tissues, and aids fat metabolism.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 0.1 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 0.3 milligrams/day

Iron

It is a mineral that is a vital component of hemoglobin (a part of red blood cells that carries oxygen to various parts of the body) and myoglobin (a part of muscle cells that stores oxygen and several enzymes in the body). In other words, iron is a mineral that is essential for the formation and proper growth of healthy blood cells, and the prevention of anemia.

As mentioned earlier, iron is the most important nutrient that enhances brain development in newborns. Normal healthy babies have a sufficient amount of iron to satisfy their nutritional needs for the first 4 months, but premature babies may be deprived of the iron that is accumulated during the last trimester of pregnancy. This deficiency may affect their thought process and motor skills. Hence, it is important to include a good amount of iron in the diet of infants.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 0.27 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 11 milligrams/day

Zinc

Like vitamin C, zinc also performs several functions, and hence, its deficiency may lead to several health problems. It is a mineral that is a component of several enzymes in the body, and is involved in most of the metabolic processes. It is essential for brain cognition and development. Apart from that, it is also essential for proper cell growth and repair, and maintenance of the immune system. It also helps in the formation of blood and protein in the body, and enhances wound healing.

Required Amount:

0-6 months - 2 milligrams/day

7-12 months - 5 milligrams/day

Along with these 4 vital nutrients, carbohydrates and proteins also contribute towards the healthy growth of the newborn. Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for babies during their initial developmental years. If carbohydrates are not ingested in sufficient amounts, the growth of the baby is stunted, as the proteins in the body are utilized for energy production. The daily requirement of carbohydrate for 0-6 months old infants is 60 grams, whereas for 7-12 month old infants, it is 95 grams. On the other hand, proteins are essential for tissue replacement in an infant's body, and the daily requirement of proteins during the first year ranges from 9 to 13 grams per day.

Finally, ask your pediatrician, whether it is necessary to start any nutrition supplements for your baby while you are breastfeeding, because, sometimes, only breastfeeding during the first 6 months may not fulfill the requirement of all the nutrients.

A Beginners Guide To Making Homemade Baby Food

Written By Unknown on Monday, August 24, 2015 | 1:32 AM

Making Homemade Baby Food

Making homemade baby food is not difficult. It is economically friendly and healthier than purchasing commercially prepared food for your baby. Baby food recipes range from puree to recipes incorporating table food into recipes for baby. It takes less time than you think to create fresh, healthy baby food. Making homemade food assures you and your baby no preservatives are used and baby is only getting nutritious and tasty food.

Things to Consider when Making Homemade Baby Food

Before making food for your baby, consult with your pediatrician, especially if this is the first somewhat solid food the baby will be eating. Your pediatrician will suggest foods to introduce to the baby and what foods should be eaten at specific ages or signs of maturing. If you choose fruits, vegetables and meat you like; your pediatrician may suggest better alternatives for different age groups.

Unless your baby displays a serious reaction to a certain food the first time they experience it, offer the baby the same food 4 days in a row. This method will allow time for a food allergy to manifest and will help determine the food the baby likes and dislikes. There will be some foods the baby will refuse to eat because of its taste, texture or smell, or even a combination of the three. It is not important for a baby to like everything offered. It is important the baby gets the right food with the proper nutrients. It is never a good idea to introduce a baby to more than one new food at a time for allergy discovering purposes.

Preparing the food ahead of time will be a tremendous time saver. A large quantity of food can be frozen in individual containers for future use. For example, the food can be frozen in ice cube trays and then transferred to another container for continued freezing. That method gives you baby food in easy to serve portions. The frozen portions will thaw quickly when set out on the counter or thawed in a microwave or submerging the container of hot water.

Precautions to take when making Homemade Baby Food

When preparing homemade baby food, always make sure your hands are clean, as well as the food preparation surface, pots or pans and cooking utensils. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before preparing the baby food, and if meat is being prepared, rinse the meat with room temperature water. Always be sure the baby food containers are clean and sterilized for baby's protection.

Always put a date on the homemade baby food container and store it properly. Refrigerate or freeze the baby food for future use, after preparation. Freeze the baby food in small quantities and only thaw one portion at a time. Do not refreeze any leftover baby food. After a feeding session, any food left in the dish should be discarded.

When serving baby food, make sure the food is room temperature to slightly warm. If the food is heated in a microwave, stir the food thoroughly to make sure there are not hot spots that could potentially burn your baby's mouth.

The Baby Food Process

After rice based cereal, your baby will most likely move on to pureed fruits, vegetables and meat. Until you know what your baby will like, buy small quantities of fruits, vegetables and meat, unless other family members consume lots of fruits, vegetables and meat. After proper washing cut the fruit and vegetables in half and either boil, steam or bake them. If they are baked, place those in a baking dish with enough water to almost cover the dish contents. Vegetables and fruit can be peeled before or after cooking.

Small vegetables such as corn, peas and lima beans do not need to be halved. Bananas can just be mashed and not cooked at all unless that is your preference. Frozen peas are much easier to prepare than fresh peas. If preparing meat, make sure all traces of fat are removed and when cooked, make sure the meat is well done with no trace of pink.

Bake the fruits and vegetables for about an hour at 350 degrees (Fahrenheit) or until they are soft. During the cooking process make sure there is sufficient water in the dish to avoid burning the fruits and vegetables and add water if necessary. When the fruits and vegetables are baked, take the dish out of the oven and let cool. Peel the fruits and vegetables, if not already peeled, after they have cooled. Cook the meat until there is no pink showing.

Place the cooled fruit or vegetable in a food processor for pureeing. Add water to the mixture until the appropriate consistency is reached. If you add too much water, dry baby cereal can be added to thicken it up. If a food processor is not available, a hand mixer or a meat grinder will suffice or in the event a mechanical means is not available, mash the fruits and vegetables with a fork until there are no lumps present. That method will be very time consuming.

The food should be very thin for babies beginning to eat solid food, and as they grow older and have some solid food eating under their belt, the food can be made a little thicker. As the baby ages, the fruits and vegetables will just have to be chopped into small pieces rather than mashed or pureed.

Once you know what kind of fruits and vegetables your baby likes, you can mix different flavors together such as bananas and peaches or peas and squash.

Using Organic Fruits and Vegetables

Organic fruits and vegetables are grown without the benefit of, or with a limited amount of, synthetic material, such as pesticides or other chemicals. Organic food is grown according to regulations and certified and labeled as organically grown. Food organically grown develops antioxidants to protect themselves against garden pest and, as a result, develop into a vegetable or fruit with higher levels of antioxidants. That means the fruits and vegetables are richer in minerals, vitamins and other pro health nutrients.

Eating organically is not just for mom and dad, but baby too. Making organic baby food will assure you your baby is getting the real deal. Who is to say a jar of baby food marked as organic is really organic? Organic fruits and vegetables were once only available in health food stores, or they were home grown. Today, organic food of every kind is available not only in specialty stores, but the average, everyday grocery store.

Organic food is prepared the same way as any other food. They can be steamed, boiled or baked and then mashed or pureed. As the baby gets older, food can be cut into small, bit size pieces, making it finger food babies can eat on their own.

The Benefits of Making Homemade Baby Food

If you have ever read the label of baby food bought at the grocery store, you will find some ingredients you have never heard of before, and some you will not be able to pronounce. I like to make my own food. It gives me the ability to control the ingredients and the quality of the food.

Another benefit of making baby food is cost. It is far less costly to make baby food than to buy it by the jars, especially since the ingredients can be purchased in bulk and in season. Making homemade baby food will even be less costly if the ingredients are homegrown.

Essential Pointers in Ensuring Proper Baby Health Care

Written By Unknown on Thursday, August 13, 2015 | 1:54 AM

It brings unimaginable joy for parents to have their baby warm and bubbly finally in their hands. However, keeping baby safe, warm and healthy requires more than comfortable clothing. If you are a parent, you would want to provide your child proper baby health care. In order to do this you need sufficient knowledge about how to go about it. Here are essential pointers in ensuring that your baby receives the correct nutrition and the appropriate care that he needs.

Bring your baby to the doctor regularly

"Prevention is better than cure," is an adage that still holds true today. If you want to ensure that your baby health care efforts are not rendered useless, you may want to bring your baby for regular check-ups. This would assure your baby is in good health. The doctor may recommend proper immunization shots and other preventive measures to ascertain that he stays healthy. With these constant monitoring, you are certain that sufficient baby health care management is instituted.

Choose natural health care products

Natural baby health care products have less side effects and cause less allergies. A good example is to choose homemade food instead of commercially prepared products. You can obtain baby's vitamins and essential nutrients from vegetables like carrots, potatoes, bananas, apples and oranges. The carrots will provide carotene and vitamin A, while potatoes, bananas, and apples can supply glucose for energy, vitamins and minerals. Instead of giving baby syrup for vitamin C, the oranges can take care of this need. Baby health care food items should be more of fruits and vegetables because they contain anti-toxins and phytochemicals.

You will need the necessary equipment though to prepare your baby's nutritious food into a consistency that he could eat safely. A reliable grinder or mill can help you prepare baby's food within a few minutes. It can also be very useful when your baby starts eating meat. The grinder can produce uniform, tasty baby meals.

Use natural baby health care lotions or oils

Examine the components of the skin products you use for your baby. Skin products that contain many chemicals can cause allergies and skin reactions. Purchase only products with labels that indicate natural components. There are baby health care skin products especially made to suit your baby's skin. Be a smart and patient buyer so you can give him only the best. Lavender oil is one good product for him. It moisturizes his skin while acting as a mosquito repellant simultaneously.

Take note of your allergies because most probably your baby has them too. Allergies can be transmitted from mother to child.

Maintain a healthy environment

Your baby's environment should be clean and free from pollutants and hazardous chemicals. These include your air fresheners and household cleaning solutions. Most of these have chemicals, which can be harmful to your baby. Make sure that your household cleaners are environmentally friendly before using them.

Proper baby health care involves all aspects of your baby's growth, because health is a multi-factorial phenomenon. The food that he eats, the solutions that you apply to his skin, the condition of his surroundings and the air that he breathes are all factors in contributing to your child's health and well-being. With reliable and proper baby health care methods, you can rest assured that your baby remains healthy and strong.
