Q&A: ARE CHILDREN SAFE PLAYING ON ARTIFICIAL TURF?

Written By Unknown on Thursday, March 31, 2016 | 2:35 AM

Is artificial turf safe? The debate is heating up:

The Connecticut legislature is reviewing a new bill to ban crumb rubber playgrounds across the state.

California state scientists are evaluating the “potential human health effects associated with use of recycled waste tires in playground and synthetic turf products.”

Last month three federal agencies launched a joint investigation into the safety of popular crumb rubber surfaces on playgrounds and playing fields.

Dr. Robert Wright, chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York City, answers our questions about how artificial turf may pose concerns for children’s health.

HCHW: The Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center has called for a moratorium on the use of artificial turf made from recycled rubber tires. Why?

Robert Wright: We are advising against the use of crumb rubber fields until safety is proven. This is because the product is made from recycled automobile tires, which are well known to contain metals and other toxic chemicals. Some components of tire rubber are linked to cancer and others are toxic to the nervous and other systems.

The risks of exposure have not been fully studied, especially in the context of the wide range of potentially harmful chemicals, which are found in rubber tires. Ironically, if a field was filled with discarded tires it would be considered a hazardous waste site. The primary difference is that the tires were ground up in the crumb rubber field.

What makes children uniquely vulnerable to harmful exposures from crumb rubber surfaces?

RW: There are many reasons to think children will be more vulnerable:

Children on average are lower to the ground and therefore closer to the source of off-gassing.

Children have higher ventilation rates relative to adults and if significant off-gassing occurs, they will inhale a larger amount relative to their body size.

If ingested, a crumb rubber pellet would represent a larger per kilogram dose in a child versus an adult, because of their smaller size.

Many of these fields are in schools and therefore used almost exclusively by children.

Young children are not able to regulate their body temperature as well as adults, making them more vulnerable to injury from the extreme heat exposures that are possible on crumb rubber fields.

Children are commonly more susceptible to environmental chemicals, biologically, because their bodies are developing and the chemicals or toxic insults can offset the normal developmental trajectory.

What responsibilities do schools, communities and sports organizations have in making play surfaces safe for kids?

RW: The decision to purchase a particular type of field is not in the hands of parents, which we believe means that these organizations must take these issues into consideration.

At a minimum, these institutions need to address the concerns of parents and whether there are alternatives that can be mutually agreed upon as safe. There are such alternatives for fields – cork, for example. In addition, while grass fields can have pesticide applications, such applications are not mandatory and can be controlled or minimized with proper planning.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Consumer Product Safety Commission have teamed up to investigate the safety of crumb rubber surfaces on playgrounds and playing fields. What do you hope their investigation achieves?

RW: The research on off-gassing and exposure is very incomplete, and does not consider the full spectrum of chemicals that are found in crumb rubber, either individually or as a mixture.

We hope to see comprehensive studies that consider, at a minimum, exposure assessment under realistic playing conditions, all possible routes of exposure (inhalation, ingestion and absorption through skin) and potential health effects not only of individual chemicals, but also of mixtures of chemicals. Mixtures are the real life scenario.

What can concerned parents do to safeguard children who play on crumb rubber surfaces?

RW: Concerned parents should spring into action even before a crumb rubber field is installed. The most effective strategy is for parents to join with each other and also to form alliances with medical societies, nursing organizations, elected officials and anyone else in the community who is in position to raise vociferous opposition to the installation of these untested products.

Once a field has been installed, parents can minimize their children’s risk by always making their children shower as soon as they return home from playing on the fields in order to remove any crumb rubber.

A second step is to avoid playing on the field on very hot, sunny days when temperatures can reach dangerous levels.

A third step is to meticulously clean any cuts or abrasions caused by the field, because there have been outbreaks of [staph bacteria] skin infections associated with such cuts and scrapes.

NEW FINDINGS ON PEANUT ALLERGY PREVENTION

Written By Unknown on Monday, March 21, 2016 | 11:57 PM

Eating peanuts during infancy – rather than avoiding them – may be the key to preventing long-term peanut allergies in children.

The benefit of early exposure persists even if kids later take a year-long break from eating any peanut foods, according to a new study from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (part of the National Institutes of Health), conducted by the Institute-funded Immune Tolerance Network.

The new study builds upon a landmark clinical trial called LEAP, or Learning Early About Peanut Allergy, which concluded last year. LEAP showed that eating peanuts from infancy to age five reduced the likelihood of developing a peanut allergy by 81 percent in high-risk children. (Children are considered “high-risk” if they have eczema, other food allergies or if peanut allergies run in the family.) Children in the study ate foods containing peanuts, since the nut itself is a choking hazard for children younger than four.

The latest study, called LEAP-On, was published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine and extended the research to find out whether kids who later stopped eating peanut foods for a year would be more or less likely to develop the allergy: They were less.

In a second study, led by King’s College London for the U.K. Food Standards Agency and released the same day, researchers tested whether the same approach could prevent other common food allergies, but the results were less conclusive.

Just six food groups cause a whopping 90 percent of children’s food allergies: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy and wheat. Rates of peanut allergy in particular have risen dramatically in the past 15 years, afflicting an estimated 2 percent of American children. Symptoms range from hives and wheezing to life-threatening anaphylaxis, prompting schools, community centers and even airlines to adopt strict policies aimed at protecting allergic kids from peanut products.

For years, parents have tried to ward off peanut allergies in their children by avoiding the food altogether. Beginning in 2000, doctors and allergists advised parents of high-risk children that they should not eat potentially allergenic foods before age three. By 2008, however, health care professionals realized the advice wasn’t helping, and retracted the recommendations.

The landmark LEAP study changed everything, shifting the prevailing wisdom from avoidance to exposure. After LEAP was published last year, 10 medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, agreed on new interim guidance that recommended early exposure. If your child is at high risk, however, talk to your doctor first. Click here for the Academy’s recommendations.

Now parents, health care professionals and the public have a chance to weigh in on what may become new, formal recommendations for peanut allergy prevention. The federal allergy institute, the agency that funded LEAP and LEAP-On, has drafted an update to its 2010 Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Food Allergy in the United States. The update, which specifically addresses how to prevent peanut allergies, is open for a 45-day public comment period ending on April 18. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. Here’s how.

While the recommendations remain under review, parents should talk to their pediatrician or allergist about peanut exposure, especially if their child has ever had a reaction to peanuts; has other food allergies, particularly to eggs; has eczema or a family history of allergies.

3 Ways Babies Can Teach Us How to Beat Fatigue

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 | 2:19 AM

We've all experienced it at some point. Some days, exhaustion can feel like a way of life. Sometimes new parents have it the hardest. Middle of the night feedings disrupting your sleep, which interrupts a regular exercise routine, which compounds with an unpredictable diet. But for new parents and non-parents alike there are things we can all learn from the techniques of a baby's simple and natural way of living that will help us combat our own fatigue.

Here are 3 simple things you can do to easily beat fatigue:

1. Keep a Regular Schedule

Now of course I'm not suggesting you nap throughout the day like a baby, but with a consistent nightly sleeping schedule, your body's natural circadian rhythm is easily maintained. The circadian rhythm is a term that describes the natural sleep/wake/eating schedule that we all have and are supposed to follow. It's a complex system that is regulated by your exposure to light (or lack thereof) as well as a number of hormones, including melatonin and cortisol. These two hormones have a direct effect on core body temperature and blood sugar regulation, respectively.

The circadian rhythm is much like the sun which predictably rises and sets each day. Your body mimics this predictability to live effectively and efficiently. However, with our brilliant intellect and ingenuity, we've invented ways to live outside of this natural cycle. We have lights during darkness and food at our disposal any time of the day or night. Unfortunately, these wonderful conveniences make it easier to stray from a regular eating and sleeping pattern. Then, as a result of poor sleep and fluctuations to normal blood sugar levels the circadian rhythm is disrupted and fatigue begins to set in. Get at least 7-9 hours of sleep and do your best to go to bed at the same time every night. With this consistency, your body is able to maintain a normal circadian rhythm that will ultimately help you combat fatigue during waking hours.

2. The Most Important Meal

New babies can enjoy nature's perfect baby food: breast milk. Cleverly designed to contain the proper amounts of fats, carbohydrates and proteins in a great package which makes it available for easy feedings, breast milk provides all the nutrition babies need for at least the first six months of life. There is ample literature to suggest that feeding babies every 3-4 hours allows them to be more relaxed and easy going because they consciously know that food will be coming, plus their digestive systems will not be overtaxed with too frequent or too spread out of feedings.

Finding this proper nutritional balance for children and adults is also critical for good health. As with babies, you should eat smaller meals every 3-4 hours throughout the day to stabilize blood sugar and prevent tiredness.

And, when it comes to preventing fatigue during the day, breakfast truly is the most important meal. Our normal metabolic functions slow down throughout the night so we don't get hungry as we sleep. We wake each morning having not eaten anything for 8-12 hours, depending on what time we had dinner the night before. A healthy breakfast helps balance cortisol and therefore prevents you from a mid-morning energy crash from dropping blood sugar levels. A study published earlier this year demonstrated the cognitive benefit that test subjects had when they consumed at least a 450-calorie breakfast of both protein and fiber. Another group of scientists studied over 200 medical students and monitored their performance after skipping breakfast. Not surprisingly, those students who skipped breakfast had an overall increase in fatigue.

3. Belly Breathing

With the rhythmic movement of their little bellies and the innocent, gentle noises they make, there are few things in this world more peaceful than watching a baby sleep. Babies naturally take deep breaths that originate from their bellies, with both inhaling and exhaling taking on a slow and relaxed state. We average about 15,500 breaths a day and for every single one of them, we don't even have to think about it! It's a natural action. But unfortunately, as we move out of childhood and into adulthood, life gets busier and our breathing becomes more hurried and shallow, coming less from the muscles designed to facilitate breathing (i.e., the diaphragm) and causing an increase in accessory muscle tension. Because the lower third portion of your lungs has the most efficient oxygen exchange sites, this type of shallow breathing prevents you from getting all the necessary oxygen your body needs, causing fatigue.

It's important to get as much oxygen to those lower lungs as possible! A famous study done in the early 1980's demonstrated that adults who spent as little as 10 minutes a day focusing on their breathing had better energy and greater work performance. You can do that. Just take 10 minutes each day and focus on improving your belly breathing. Sit in a comfortable location, with your spine straight and shoulders back, breathe in deep through your nose for a count of seven seconds. Allow your belly to expand outwards as you inhale. Then hold your breath for a count of four seconds. Finally, exhale for a count of nine seconds, this time moving your belly inward. The exhale is a little longer than the inhale, which is done on purpose. When you move to the next inhale cycle, you'll notice some reflexive support from all the muscles that are necessary for proper belly breathing.

In summary:

*Get 7-9 hours of sleep and go to bed at the same time each night
*Eat a healthy breakfast of protein and fiber
*Spend 10 minutes a day belly breathing

Follow these simple steps, and you'll be as happy as a baby and smiling at the world with plenty of energy!

How To Safely Smoke Cigarette In Front Of Your Baby

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 | 11:48 PM

A baby's health is considered above other parental responsibilities as always supreme. But this safeguard on their health is always constantly threatened by parents who smoke the traditional cigarettes.

Traditional cigarettes are well known to have within them tobacco and tar which are a threat to a baby's health making it at great risk of getting fatal chest problems amongst other diseases. On the other hand, the emitted smoke, its odor is plainly offensive to the child and may be the main reason why it cries as often as it drives you nuts. Moreover their always is in this cigarettes a residue of a foul acrid smell that irritates the baby's senses and eyes.

Whereas, traditional cigarettes posses cancer causing agents; termed as carcinogens, there as appeared a new sensation in the nature of electronic cigarettes. This may give sufficient answers to how a smoker may safely smoke a cigarette in front of his or her baby.

It is generally agreed by all and sundry that as far as traditional smoking goes, there is no way it would ever be safe to smoke in front of a child without directly exposing him/her to fatal danger. Nevertheless, electronic is said to be safe in many ways.

No Chemicals.

Electronic cigarettes don't emit the usual traditional chemicals that are carcinogenic and that consequently cause cancer. So as you smoke it, it is safe for the baby and also safe for you. Besides, tobacco and tar that are the basic component of traditional cigarettes are just nonexistent.
Harmless smoke

We've so far established that the smoke from the traditional cigarettes is dangerous to the baby's sleeping, seeing and sense abilities. However, the electronic cigarettes yes emit smoke but this fumes are simply and basically harmless vapor that end up evaporating to thin air and so fast you wont even realize leave alone the baby. In addition the smoke is not visible and doesn't irritate the eyes.

Smoked anywhere

Smoking is very addictive. In this regard by extension, addicted smokers have perfected the uncanny habit of smoking dangerously in front of their babies even when it is legally not accepted. To help such people, who refuse to quit smoking or are willing to leave but the withdrawal symptoms scare them away, presented is a harmless electronic cigarette that can satisfy their attachment to smoking and still retain its safety especially towards their babies. It is even examined and disclosed that the same sensational, emotional and physical pleasures are inherent in the cigarette.

Non offensive

Ask the parents how they feel with babies who incessantly cry denying them their hard earned sleep. The answer will be universal, hell on earth. A contributing factor to a baby's irritability may be the odor, acrid smell which can be taken care of by using electronic cigarettes.

Safe

Safety is paramount, as mentioned earlier, to a baby's wellbeing. After considering the factors that reduce the health risks through the use of electronic smoking, no cancer causing agents, no acrid smell irritating smell and senses, no chemicals causing other maladies, not flammable, it is easy to therefore say it is safe.

Baby Health Care Hints

Written By Unknown on Monday, October 5, 2015 | 12:46 AM

Baby health care is a serious subject which needs a basis with which the parents can refer to when it comes to their child. New and old parents rely on doctors to evaluate and diagnose their baby. Pediatricians are doctors who specialize in children usually twelve years old and below.

Sickness and Health

For the first year of a baby's life, he or she will be visiting the pediatrician at least one or twice a month. Baby health care requires that the newborn be monitored monthly to see how the baby is progressing in the growth department. This aspect of baby health care will show the doctor the baby's development and will also signal if there is something wrong with the baby. Monitoring the baby's development for the first year is just the beginning. Most, if not all, pediatricians keep a record of the child's weight and height every time the child visits the doctor.

Baby health care also includes keeping bay clean and healthy. Care should be exercised in using a new baby care product since there may be ingredients that the baby is sensitive to. It is best to use products for sensitive skin initially for baby to avoid exposing baby's skin to harsh chemicals and new elements.

Another baby health care tip is for parents to keep track of what they initially feed their baby. The initial introduction of formula needs to be monitored to see if the baby has any reactions adverse or otherwise to the formula. Baby health care will be a lot easier if the parents keep in mind that they should introduce foods one at a time to the baby to see f the baby has any allergic reactions.

Parents sometimes overreact to a fever especially if the child is fussy about it, but disregarding basic baby health care can also be hazardous to your baby's health. Monitor your baby's fever or sickness frequently. Since babies can not speak or complain they usually cry when there is discomfort or pain.

Expect the child to be fussy when he or she ahs a fever or sickness. If the crying does not stop for more then twenty or thirty minutes, it may be a good idea to have a doctor check the baby. A cry of pain is different from crying due to discomfort. Parent should be able to distinguish this.

Baby health care is something that is quite broad. Consulting with your pediatrician may be the best way to be sure regarding proper baby health care.

Mobiles - Affecting Newborns' Behavior

Written By Unknown on Friday, October 2, 2015 | 4:59 AM

Technological advances do not always come with a boon. The mobile sector is undoubtedly doing a brisk business globally but is not free from health hazards. The recent report from University of California, Los Angles (UCLA) and Aarhus, Denmark shows that pregnant mothers who use excessive mobile phones are more likely to deliver a child with behavioral and emotional problems.

These mobile phones radiate harmful signals which may result in major public health implications. In a survey conducted by the same university on more than 13,000 children, it is found that using mobile phones even two or three times daily was sufficient to increase the risk of their babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships.

Not only that the health issues are even greater if the child themselves uses the mobile phones before the age of seven. The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection maintains that "the peril mobile pose is not lower than the risk to children's health from tobacco or alcohol".

These findings are in line with warning against both pregnant women and child. According to another study at the Australian Centre for Radiofrequency Bioeffects Research confirmed that mobile phones cause a change in brain function by altering brainwaves known as alpha waves.

Associate Professor Rodney Croft from the centre said, "Although there's a tiny effect on healthy young adults, there is a possibility that it could be much stronger in children or the newborn," Professor Rodney Croft said.

The harmful radiations from the mobile phones are directed towards the head of the user and get penetrated into the body tissues and tend to absorbed by them, causing disturbance in the body metabolism. If you use mobile for long hours then your head may feel warm resulting in headache or nausea. In case of newborn or young child with thinner skin and soft bone, the damage is potentially high.

The prevention to this problem is off course lesser use of cell phones during pregnancy and otherwise too. Let's use the technology for growth of mankind but by no means - decline.

Harmful Chemicals In Baby Care Products - What's Safe?

Written By Unknown on Saturday, September 26, 2015 | 12:24 AM

Have you heard about all the harmful chemicals in everyday baby products?

Children today face increasing obstacles to healthy development, including rising incidence of premature birth; male genital defects; learning, attention and emotional disturbances; early puberty; obesity; and low sperm quality.

A recent report, "Growing Up Toxic" by the Environment California Research and Policy Center, confirmed findings that chemical exposures are the primary cause for increased disabilities and disease. The only good news is that YOU can protect your child from many of these chemicals, armed with knowledge and the commitment to buy smart.

Headlines are screaming about bisphenol A (BPA), a noxious chemical used in many plastic containers including baby bottles, water bottles, sippy cups and other containers used for food and beverages. Much of the recent clamor occurred after publication of a recent study, Baby's Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Brands of Baby Bottles.

The study, commissioned by Environmental Health groups in the U.S. and Canada, has resulted in calls for bans on BPA, an environmental estrogen, since it is known to leach out of the plastics and has been implicated in development and reproductive health risks.

Dr. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the State University of New York at Albany School of Public Health, said that BPA taken into the body before birth or in early years of life can alter the ratio of sex hormones and affect development.

"It's absolutely obscene to use a substance that can make little boys less masculine and opens the chance that little girls will go on to develop breast cancer," he said at the teleconference.

The BPA studies call for a ban on the use of BPA following action by the State of California to ban the use of phthalates and other known cancer causing ingredients in products designed for children. Phthalates (pronounced thah-lates) are used to make plastic 'soft' and is found in toys, teething rings, some bottles and other play things that children often handle or put into their mouths. The California legislation is leading other states to begin regulation on known carcinogens, hormone disruptors, neurotoxins, but the road to success is rocky and very long.

Early 2008, another study found elevated levels of phthalates found in the urine of babies who'd been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with commonly used, commercial baby products. These reports, along with a myriad of other recent studies, are contributing to real concern and outrage on the part of parents across the nation.

When the very products that are designed to encourage good parenting become a threat to good health, it creates worry and distress. It also points to the need for parents to become vigilant consumers who learn to read labels, follow new studies as they are published and begin to demand safe, clean products for their children.

One of the first and most controllable items that a parent can focus on are the skin and body care products they expose their child to each day. And, no, I'm not talking just about the baby care products. I am including all the items adults use to bathe or shower, brush their teeth, plus deodorant, lotion, makeup, nail polish and products that clean / freshen the home. READ the labels on your product containers and remember that the average American comes into contact with over 200 toxic chemicals just getting ready for work in the morning! If you put it on your own body and then pick up your child to quiet their sobs, it's safe to assume your child is getting exposed to the same 200 chemicals that you just slathered over your own body.

So, how do you get started?

Just take one step at a time. READ labels and try to limit the number of toxins in each product. I've listed the most worrisome below - clip the list and take it with you when you are shopping. Remember that if a product has 5 or 6 ingredients that are on the list - or only 1 ingredient on the list, that should be reason enough to look for a safer product.

Red Flag Ingredients (toxic synthetic chemicals) to Avoid:

· Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)

· Benzoyl Peroxide

· DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (Triethanolamine) · Dioxin

· DMDM Hydantoin & Urea (Imidazolidinyl)

· FD&C Color Pigments

· Fragrances

· Parabens

· PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

· Phthalates

· Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol

· Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

· Triclosan

· Sunscreen ingredients like benzophenone, avebenzone, methyoxycinnamates, paba, etc.

I recommend that you take the time to find the best natural, certified organic and/or wild crafted formulations. Look for certifications like: Certified ToxicFree® Product Seal, the EcoCert Seal or the USDA Certified Organic Seal.

These seals are indications that a third party has examined the formulations and judged them according to their safety standards. I believe that you have a 'Right to Know' that what is in products will not harm you or your baby! Feeling assured that the products you purchase are free from xeno-estrogens, carcinogens and other known toxic ingredients is important when you are buying for you and your baby.

Essential Pointers in Ensuring Proper Baby Health Care

Written By Unknown on Thursday, August 13, 2015 | 1:54 AM

It brings unimaginable joy for parents to have their baby warm and bubbly finally in their hands. However, keeping baby safe, warm and healthy requires more than comfortable clothing. If you are a parent, you would want to provide your child proper baby health care. In order to do this you need sufficient knowledge about how to go about it. Here are essential pointers in ensuring that your baby receives the correct nutrition and the appropriate care that he needs.

Bring your baby to the doctor regularly

"Prevention is better than cure," is an adage that still holds true today. If you want to ensure that your baby health care efforts are not rendered useless, you may want to bring your baby for regular check-ups. This would assure your baby is in good health. The doctor may recommend proper immunization shots and other preventive measures to ascertain that he stays healthy. With these constant monitoring, you are certain that sufficient baby health care management is instituted.

Choose natural health care products

Natural baby health care products have less side effects and cause less allergies. A good example is to choose homemade food instead of commercially prepared products. You can obtain baby's vitamins and essential nutrients from vegetables like carrots, potatoes, bananas, apples and oranges. The carrots will provide carotene and vitamin A, while potatoes, bananas, and apples can supply glucose for energy, vitamins and minerals. Instead of giving baby syrup for vitamin C, the oranges can take care of this need. Baby health care food items should be more of fruits and vegetables because they contain anti-toxins and phytochemicals.

You will need the necessary equipment though to prepare your baby's nutritious food into a consistency that he could eat safely. A reliable grinder or mill can help you prepare baby's food within a few minutes. It can also be very useful when your baby starts eating meat. The grinder can produce uniform, tasty baby meals.

Use natural baby health care lotions or oils

Examine the components of the skin products you use for your baby. Skin products that contain many chemicals can cause allergies and skin reactions. Purchase only products with labels that indicate natural components. There are baby health care skin products especially made to suit your baby's skin. Be a smart and patient buyer so you can give him only the best. Lavender oil is one good product for him. It moisturizes his skin while acting as a mosquito repellant simultaneously.

Take note of your allergies because most probably your baby has them too. Allergies can be transmitted from mother to child.

Maintain a healthy environment

Your baby's environment should be clean and free from pollutants and hazardous chemicals. These include your air fresheners and household cleaning solutions. Most of these have chemicals, which can be harmful to your baby. Make sure that your household cleaners are environmentally friendly before using them.

Proper baby health care involves all aspects of your baby's growth, because health is a multi-factorial phenomenon. The food that he eats, the solutions that you apply to his skin, the condition of his surroundings and the air that he breathes are all factors in contributing to your child's health and well-being. With reliable and proper baby health care methods, you can rest assured that your baby remains healthy and strong.
