Which Used Baby Items are Safe to Buy

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 | 5:03 AM

Buying used baby items can be a great way of curbing huge expenses that come with a baby. However, one must know what items are safe and what are absolute 'no-no' while buying secondhand stuffs for babies.

Parenting is a full-time job that involves a lot of responsibility. Caring for your little one is not just laborious but an expensive affair as well. However, one cute smile from your baby and you feel like everything is worth it. With little planning and wise decisions, you can bring smile on your baby's face a little too often.

Besides, you too can be relieved of financial burden to some extent. So, what are these intelligent ideas to keep off unnecessary baby expenses? Well, for one, you can largely rely on 'hand-me-downs' and used stuff, which can greatly cut the cost of numerous baby items. However, checking out the safety quotient of used items is of utmost importance to secure your baby's health. Besides, it is not recommended to get anything and everything from the consignment shops as some things are best bought new.

Used Baby Items that are Absolutely Safe

If you are expecting a baby, you will get hand-me-downs from numerous friends and relatives. Some of these items can be extremely useful and save a lot of money. However, certain items may not be entirely safe for your baby and must be discarded without a second thought. Such items are listed at the end of this article. But before that, let us discuss baby essentials that are okay to buy as used or secondhand items.

Baby Clothes

Babies need a change of clothes at least 5 - 6 times a day. Besides, babies grow out of their old clothes pretty quickly. As a result, you have to keep buying clothes every month. You can imagine the amount of money wasted on clothes, that your baby will be wearing only for a short time. Hence, it is absolutely a great idea to ask your friends and family for hand-me-downs or buy them from consignment shops. Buying used clothes online is also a good and safe option.

No matter where you buy used clothes from, just make sure that the clothes are in good condition and without drawstrings or other fancy accessories.

Socks and Shoes

Infants do not need shoes as much as toddlers do. You will be dressing your baby in shoes only once a while. Hence, it makes no sense to buy brand new shoes for your little one. Besides, she'll be outgrowing them sooner than you think. Thus, it makes perfect sense to get a pair or two of secondhand shoes.

However, you will need quite a number of sock pairs to keep your baby's feet warm. Hence, investing in used socks is also a good idea.

Hats and Sweaters

Unless you live in a hot, arid desert, you will need to wrap your little bundle in warm clothes, especially, during chilly evenings. Again, your baby will outgrow all the coats and sweaters in no time. So, you might as well get them from secondhand stores.

Toys

Used toys are safe to buy only if they are in extremely good condition. Look for chips and peeled paint (especially, if it exposes hazardous parts) as well as missing hardware. Also consider choking hazards that may result from loose parts. Buying used toys is a good option considering the fact that babies quickly lose interest in their toys and look for something new. Thus, no point in buying expensive brand new toys.

Strollers

Baby strollers can be safely bought secondhand if they are manufactured after 2007. Those manufactured before 2007 do not adhere to revised standards for safety. While buying, make sure it is sturdy, stable and without any damage. Do not a buy stroller unless you can personally assess its condition. Thus, buying online may not be a good option.

Used Baby Items that Should be Bought with Caution

While some items can be bought secondhand without thinking much, there are certain baby items that are safe only when they meet certain specifications. Some of these items include:

Baby Cribs

Owing to a large number of crib accidents and several manufacturers recalling their products, buying baby crib has become a difficult task. Crib safety standards were revised in June 2011, hence cribs produced before this date can be considered unsafe. If you must buy a secondhand crib, you need to conduct a thorough examination, so that you end up with only the best crib for your baby. Check, if the crib is sturdy and its posts are secured in place. Avoid drop-side cribs at all costs, no matter how lucrative the deal. Also make sure the posts are high enough to prevent the baby from climbing out of it, as well as closely spaced, to avoid incidences of suffocation.

Baby Furniture

Baby furniture like high chair, play-pens can be bought used, only if it is gently used and in brand new condition. The high chair should have five-point harness and a crotch post for your child's safety. Avoid buying furniture that has been re-painted.

Car Seats

Car seats are an essential item to secure your baby's safety during car journeys.

You must not compromise with the quality of the car seat at any cost.

Secondhand car seats may have been damaged in crashes even though they may not show signs of it. This renders them useless for another such event.

Hence, avoid buying car seats from unknown owners. If you must, buy them from friends and family or other reliable sources, so that you can be assured of your child's safety. Considering the low cost of car seats, you might even think of buying a brand new one.

Baby Bathtubs

Getting used baby bathtubs is a good idea as they are expensive and required only for a short while. However, secondhand bathtubs may raise certain hygiene issues, if you are not careful enough while buying. Avoid tubs that show signs of mold, mildew growth or other damages.

Baby Items that You Should Never Buy Secondhand

We have seen items that can be bought safely as well as ones that need caution while buying. However, there are certain baby items that you should never reuse for your baby, even if you are getting them for free. The list of such items is as follows:

Breast pumps

Baby bottles

Crib mattress

Blankets and bedding

Baby slings

Although, it's a good idea to buy used baby items in some cases, make sure you do not compromise on your baby's safety in any way. Always buy used items from reliable sources and inquire if the previous owner bought them new or used. Besides, plan your finances well so that you are not tempted to buy everything used and thereby, jeopardize your baby's safety.

Important Steps To Having A Healthy Baby

Written By Unknown on Thursday, September 24, 2015 | 12:39 AM

Having a healthy baby is so important to the mom to be. During my pregnancy, I was among the majority of women who worried about all the things that could go wrong. Every little thing was a cause of concern. "Why am I so tired?" "Why am I nauseous?" "Am I eating enough, and am I eating the right foods?" "Why am I not gaining any weight?" The list went on and on. I soon found out that I was not alone in experiencing all these questions and fears. The majority of women, especially those of us who are pregnant for the first time, experience some level of anxiety about the health of their baby. What's important to remember, though is that a woman of child bearing age who is in good health is, statistically, low risk.

Once I accepted this fact, I decided to stop worrying about factors that were out of my control, and concentrate on the factors I had some control over. Namely diet and exercise. I joined a wonderful program that I found on-line. It gave me a nutritional guideline, a healthy exercise program for pregnant women, and a forum where I could share my experiences with other women going through pregnancy at the same time I was. All of these factors really helped lower, if not eliminate my anxieties. Instead of worrying, I started to feel very relaxed and confident, because I knew I was taking all the steps I could to ensure healthy babies. Besides that, I felt better physically. The steps that I was taking to provide for my babies' health were benefiting me as well. I couldn't believe the level of comfort and energy I was experiencing.

In fact, at the beginning of my third trimester, my husband and I went on a seven night Caribbean cruise. If anyone had told me when I first found out I was pregnant that I would be on a cruise in my third trimester I would have laughed in their face. Yet, here I was, sipping virgin pina coladas, walking the beach, swimming a little and even beating my husband at ping pong. I truly couldn't believe how much I was enjoying my pregnancy. I owed it all to the fact that I was able to toss out all the old-school advice I was getting, telling me to stay off my feet, eat like a horse, etc.. Instead I found a program that made sense to me. Taking better care of me meant taking better care of my babies as well. The final results--I delivered two healthy babies just two weeks short of full term. I was able to deliver them naturally, avoiding the recoup time of a C-section, and I was back on my feet and back in shape faster than I ever would have believed possible.

I recently became a first-time mom at the age of 39. I was experiencing a lot of anxiety worrying about my age and the fact that I was having twins. I received all kinds of conflicting advice as to what I should and shouldn't do while pregnant. I finally decided to research for myself. With my doctors consent I followed a program of diet and exercise. Once I started, my anxiety went away, and I had a very comfortable, active and problem free pregnancy. I delivered two very healthy boys, and within just 7 weeks of delivery I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight and even better shape. I've posted my story along with pictures at Pregnant-Healthy.com [http://www.pregnant-healthy.com].

Baby Bronchitis

Baby bronchitis is as a result of exposure to pathogens causing the infection. These pathogens include viruses and bacteria. In order to treat baby bronchitis, the exact cause should be known first. This is by doing diagnosis in your nearest baby health center. The tests done at the center will let you and the doctor know the exact cause of the disease. The tests include sputum and blood tests. In extreme circumstances, a chest x-ray may be performed.

Once the diagnosis is complete, medication can be started. These include bronchodilaters, expectorant cough syrup and antibiotics. The antibiotics are given if the cause of the condition is bacteria pathogens. Baby bronchitis symptoms include fever, fatigue, headaches, expectorant cough, shortness of breath and wheezing. The most pronounced symptoms are coughing, shortness of breath, fever and wheezing.

Immediate action should be taken when a fever is reported. Baby bronchitis should not be self treated. Bronchitis is a dangerous disease that can lead to pneumonia and asthma. Babies with this disease should be taken care of well. This is to make them recover completely after the illness. Most babies lose a lot of weight when under bronchitis attack.

Extra effort is necessary for a baby to recover from the disease. As bronchitis is contagious, babies should be kept away from family members who have the disease. Extra caution to those who handle the babies is necessary. Frequent washing of hands and general body hygiene are the keys to avoiding spreading the disease. Baby bronchitis should not be home treated. A doctor should be the one to give the medication and the dosage should be followed to the letter.

Your Little Gourmet: Baby's Fifth Month Guide

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 | 2:28 AM

Baby smiled her real smiles at you and you were so charmed,
you decided nothing could be better. But baby has more in
store for you in her fifth month. Endless entertainment
coupled with increasing interest in her surroundings makes
your five month-old baby an ideal playmate.

Squeals and smiles

You will be amazed by the repertoire of sounds your baby can
produce now. She is always eager to communicate with you
with her smiles, and squeals of delight. Laugh and your baby
laughs with you. Baby babble is almost at its peak now.

In baby's fifth month, she can sit with support and haul
herself up a little bit when she is laid on her tummy. She
can pay attention to tiny objects, but it is wise to keep
such objects well out of your curious baby's reach.

More sleep, yet less rest for you

Your five month-old baby sleeps for longer stretches at
night, which means your under-eye circles might soon go
away. But when he is awake, he loves your company and wants
all your attention. His daytime naps continue and give you a
few short breaks to get that pile of laundry done.

Are you ready for real food?

Probably. Once your baby's tongue thrust reflex has
disappeared and she seems interested in what you are eating,
you might want to premiere with solids. Start feeding baby
when he neither has a full tummy nor a ravenous appetite.
The trick is to know when to begin, and more important when
to stop. When she looks disinterested and turns her head
away, it is time to abandon project cereal until the next
meal.

In baby's fifth month, she will be open to the idea of
trying out a cup. Pour a few drops into her mouth. Most of
it will probably be spilt, but the earlier you start a cup,
the fewer the spills later in childhood. A sippy cup has its
own advantages, but it might be tough to wean an older child
from a sippy.

Unfortunately, along with your dimples and your lovely
golden hair, your baby also inherits some of your food
allergies. Wheat, cow's milk, soy, peanuts and fish are
common culprits.

Feeding your five month-old baby is one of the messiest
tasks you will ever perform. The baby-on-your-lap method is
by far the most logistically tricky. An infant seat can
double as a feeding chair. Make sure you strap baby in and
never leave baby unsupervised in an infant seat even for a
moment.

Get some exercise

Most mobile walkers and jumpers are unsafe and some have
even been banned. A safer option would be an exersaucer or a
stationary walker. A baby swing can work miracles as it
calms your baby while you are occupied. But too much use of
the baby swing can impair his practice of motor functions
such as walking, crawling and cruising.

Health is wealth

In baby's fifth month, a medical examination is generally
not scheduled unless you have specific health concerns or
questions. Read all about environmental hazards that can
affect your baby both at home and outdoors. Try to minimize
your baby's exposure to environmental hazards by adequately
childproofing your home, monitoring baby all the time and
following safety measures.

Parenting is a demanding job and there are no job
regulations or specifications. Keep yourself informed so
that you know what is best for your baby.

Safety Precautions Before Preparing Baby Food Recipes

Written By Unknown on Saturday, September 19, 2015 | 1:11 AM

Homemade baby food recipes are the healthiest option when it comes to feeding your baby. These are also easy to make and store. Babies start to eat solids at 6 months and it should be pureed. Purees can easily be made from fruits and vegetables and they are far healthier than jarred foods as they are fresh and only require one or two ingredients. Please read these tips to start solid foods before you start preparing solid foods for your baby. Safety should be considered first above all just like what you did in planning for your pregnancy diet.

Tips To Start Solid Foods
  • Solid foods are usually introduced sometime between four to six months and the key sign you should look for to see that your baby is ready for solids such as the ability to chew.
  •  Observe your baby to check the best time to feed your baby within the day, for example before, after, or at a divided time from formula or breastfeeding.
  •  Introduce solids to your baby gradually to check for food allergies, do it by taking note of the food ingredients, give the food at a time, and wait three to four days before introducing another.
  • Use a teaspoon first or smaller than that when you are first introducing solid foods and the gradually shift to a tablespoon or more as your baby grows and tolerate eating solid foods.
  • Consult your health care provider if your baby won't eat any solid foods by the time he is seven to 8 months.
  • In most cases, an iron fortified rice cereal is the first solid food that your baby should eat. And continue to try on other cereals, like oatmeal, and then slowly introduce strained fruits, vegetables and lastly, meat.
  • Don't stress yourself too much in introducing solids, your baby would reach a stage when he/she will like to eat everything.
Overfeeding

You are over feeding your baby if you use the feeding as a reward to a good behaviour or expect your baby to finish their food even if he is not hungry. It also occur when babies are instantly fed as a response to crying, when bottle or breast feeding is used as a distraction or activity, or when you allow keeping the bottle with your baby at all times. As a result, this can cause reflux, diarrhea or even obesity. You are giving more nutrition than a baby needs for healthy growth and development. So take note of this while you prepare your baby food recipes.

Affordable California State Child Health Insurance Plans - I Can't Pay Much

Written By Unknown on Saturday, September 12, 2015 | 12:31 AM

Finding Affordable or No Cost Insurance For Your Child

Every child needs dependable health insurance. However, not all parents can afford the full cost of private medical insurance. As a result, there are a variety of programs offered by the state of California and private organizations that can provide health care to financially strapped families.

Through these programs, there should be no child in California that doesn't have health insurance.

In the sections below we will give an overview of the child health insurance programs that are available in California. Some of these plans provide complete coverage for children at no cost, and others provide just the basic services. Then we'll outline the steps parents should take to find the best program for their children.

Medi-Cal

This is the name for California's Medicaid program. The program is administered by California, and is financed equally by the Federal and State government. Medi-Cal provides no cost health insurance to low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities. People that qualify for Medi-Cal can receive free preventive care, treatment for injuries and illnesses, dental care, vision screening, and mental health treatment.

This program is one of the cornerstones of the Affordable Care Act, and will expand considerably to take in new people in 2014.

Healthy Families

The healthy families program provides low cost health insurance to the children of low income families. This program provides a variety of services such as medical, dental, visions, and preventive care. The program requires families to meet certain income requirements which may viewed at the following link: http://www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov/HFProgram/Income_Guidelines.aspx

The Healthy Families program is being rolled into the Medi-Cal program during 2013. The transition plan will ensure that families do not see a disruption in services, and will increase the benefits that children receive once inside of Medi-Cal. Healthy Families is still accepting applications for new children.

Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP)

This is not an insurance program. However, the program does assist low income families in obtaining preventive care and health assessments for their children. CHDP provides checkups, nutrition evaluations and guidance, immunizations, hearing, and vision screenings. This program is administered by the state Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). The program helps families determine their eligibility for assistance programs, and enroll in the appropriate care program, such as Healthy Families and Medi-Cal.

Children's Health Initiative (CHI)

Children's Health initiative is run by an independent non-profit known as The Institute For Health Policy Solutions (IHPS). CHI works with many counties to reach the low-income families with children that don't have health insurance. CHI works with families whose income is less than 300% of the Federal Povery Level. By providing technical support and guidance, programs are created in each county to create "Healthy Kids" insurance plans in a partnership with the local communities and businesses.

CHI helps families determine which state programs they qualify for, and can assist in the enrollment process.

For information about CHI in your county, see the following map of California: http://www.ihps-ca.org/localcovsol/cov_initiatives.html

California Children's Services (CCS)

CCS is a state program that provides health care assistance to children up to age 21 with special health problems. The program works with Medi-Cal and Healthy Families to provide case management and ensure that children receive the right care and see the right physicians for their special health needs. Examples of special health problems are cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, cerebral palsy, heart disease, cancer, and traumatic injuries.

Steps You Should Take To Find Affordable Child Health Insurance

If the mother of a baby is enrolled in Medi-Cal or the Aid for Infants and Mothers (AIM) program, then the steps below will not apply for getting baby health insurance after birth. In this situation, the baby will be transferred into Medi-Cal with the mother, or into Healthy Families or Medi-Cal if the mother is in the AIM program. For all other situations, use the steps outlined below.
  1. The first step is to look at the coverage map for the Children's Health Initiative above. If CHI has an active program in your area, then this program can act as your partner in helping you get into the correct health program.
  2. If CHI is not active in your county, then contact the Child Health and Disability Prevention Program. This office can help you through the process of finding the correct program and assist you in filling out the necessary forms, or they will put you in contact with a local office for assistance.
  3. If neither of the steps above works, then you should contact your local Medi-Cal office. Medi-Cal will be your lowest cost solution, so start with this program
  4. If you do not qualify for Medi-Cal, then contact the Healthy Families program.
No child in California should be left without health insurance. By providing the proper care and nurturing, we ensure a better future for our state. The programs we have outlined above can provide families with financial difficulties, the health care their children need. The first move is to follow the outlined path, taking one step at a time, and enrolling your child or children.

Is There A Link Between Gut Health and Autism?

Written By Unknown on Monday, September 7, 2015 | 2:57 AM

Autism Just Doesn't Affect The Child Diagnosed It Affects The Whole Family.
It's such a misunderstood disorder and has been linked to many possible factors. Although the child with autism may be in physical pain and have trouble communicating, the family shares their pain as well. It can be especially frustrating before you know what the issue is. When CJ was young, I knew that he was in pain and felt helpless at first. Then, my inner warrior kicked in and I found out all I could about autism and how to heal my son from the inside out. Autism used to be blamed on the mother and the children were often hidden out of sight at home or in an institution. As more research sheds light on this complicated disease, and more children are diagnosed correctly, more people speak out on the effects autism has had on their children as well as families.
Kelly Preston and John Travolta's Son Jett Was Diagnosed With Autism
Recently Kelly Preston was on the tv show The Doctors and she shared her feelings about what contributed to her son Jett's autism and seizures. She feels there were several factors involved. During pregnancy she had food poisoning, which she feels affected Jett as well. A hard and fast delivery resulted in a ruptured placenta, causing a high fever. Kelly was given antibiotics to combat the infection. Kelly asked 3 doctors if it was safe to take medication and breastfeed at the same time. They all told her it was OK. Well, Jett got thrush, a yeast infection-Candida-that often results in leaky gut syndrome as well as other gut issues.
I Can Relate To Kelly's Feelings
I believe the gut is a key issue in the cause of autism. When I was pregnant with CJ, I had two bladder infections and was given antibiotics both times. No one ever told me to take probiotics during and/or after I finished the medication to replenish my good gut bacteria. I believe that had I taken probiotics after the first infection, I would not have gotten another one. I really believe this affected CJ as he was born with cradle cap-another type of yeast/Candida infection. Many children with autism have leaky gut syndrome. Giving pregnant women antibiotics without telling them about the importance of replenishing their gut bacteria with probiotics is the real problem and the beginning of a major catastrophe ahead.
An Imbalanced Gut Equals An Unhappy Baby
Poor CJ had stomach issues when he was a baby. He threw up all the time and cried. People told me he would grow out of it-that he was just colicky or a fussy baby. I wish I knew then what I know now about the importance of probiotics. He wouldn't have had to suffer so long until we began to heal his gut. CJ was miserable and in pain the first few years of his life until we discovered fermented and cultured foods. Once we began to replenish the good bacteria in his gut, CJ slowly began to heal.
This Is Important Information To All Woman Considering Having A Baby
Your gut health influences your child's future over-all health. Research has linked a mother's gut flora to her baby's gut flora. In fact, your gut flora changes each trimester to help support the baby's growth during pregnancy. Babies with a vaginal birth have more diverse gut flora than babies born by C-section. Researchers think that this may lead to better health as they grow up. So if you eat healthy and keep your gut bacteria balanced, your baby will have a balanced gut. It seems so simple, but how many OB/GYN's are informing their patients about this? I was told to take my prenatal vitamins with folic acid, but never told about the importance of gut health. I know part of the problem is that gut bacteria has only recently gotten the attention it deserves, so maybe my doctors just weren't aware of the importance of a balanced gut. Seventeen years later, I wonder how many doctors recommend a balanced diet including fermented/cultured foods to balance gut bacteria? Or how about recommending a "No Sugar Diet?" so that if there is a yeast infection in her body, it won't feed and thrive on the added sugar? That's an easy place to start!
There Are Many Theories As To What Causes Autism
I believe that there is not just one cause per child. Rather, I think several factors influence the likelihood that your child will be diagnosed with autism. I also believe the best way to decrease the chances is to keep your gut balanced before, during and after pregnancy. No doctor knows everything about every possible cause of any disorder. That's why it's so important for you to be your own warrior and research as much as possible. An imbalanced gut may be just a piece of the puzzle related to autism, but it is definitely worth the time and energy to research it. Besides, a healthy gut:
· Improves digestive function
· Improves bowel function
· Improves liver function
· Improves circulatory function
· Improves joint and muscle function
· Improves sleep function
· Improves resistance to allergies
· Improves vitamin absorption
· Improves lactose tolerance
· Improves gluten tolerance
· Improves appetite
· Improves skin quality
· Improves metabolism
· Improves mental clarity (gut-brain connection)
· Decreases your digestive ailments
· Decreases your stomach ailments
· Decreases incidence of heart burn
· Decreases incidence of constipation
· Decreases incidence of diarrhea
· Decreases the presence of yeast infections
· Decreases incidence of oral cavity infections
· Decreases wrinkles
· Decreases gas and bloating
· Increases nutritional absorption
· Increases energy
· Increases hydration
So who wouldn't want to replenish their good gut bacteria?
It's Up To You To Be Your Own Warrior
Doctors are ordinary people faced with an extraordinary job of healing people. They do not have all the answers, nor do they know all the questions to ask. Read and learn as much as you can about the importance of a healthy gut BEFORE you get pregnant. You will be given so much advice from doctors, friends, family and even strangers! Don't take it all as the only truth, but at the same time don't discount what someone has to say. Not all "old wives tales" are fantasy; most of them have been handed down for generations. Our ancestors knew the importance of fermented/cultured foods, but we began to push this in the background as processed and convenience foods inundated our culture. Sometimes simple is better!
Is Their Proof That Fermented Foods Work?
People always ask me that question, and I have three answers for them. First, YES! CJ is living/breathing proof of a healthy boy thanks to probiotics. Second, history and our ancestors have shown the importance of fermented foods. We don't do what they did anymore and it shows in the state of our health today. Obesity and diseases related to inflammation are skyrocketing! Let's go back in time and eat simply and healthy! Third, don't believe me, all you have to do is go to your favorite web browser and type in benefits of fermented foods to read all about the research proving the benefits of fermented/cultured probiotic foods. It's amazing how much money is being spent on research proving what our ancestors knew so many years ago! Keep in mind, it's just FOOD. So try some cultured/fermented foods. You'll be glad you did!

Baby Health - Perceptions Beyond Borders

Written By Unknown on Monday, August 31, 2015 | 12:54 AM

Depending on the culture, people have their own beliefs and perceptions regarding childcare. Do not depend on cultural insights anymore. We had better depend on the scientific information and healthy means to raise our kids. As you know majority of the men population are circumcised. Many parents in different regions delay the circumcision. They prefer to celebrate it in festive manner.

This is totally unhealthy and bad idea. The day a baby boy is born, if he needs to be circumcised then let it happen at the same time. Even if you cannot tolerate to do it by the doctor on the same day, do it on the next day or at least before the baby and mom leaves the hospital. Now understand why you need to do it at this hurry. At the kid age, the long jumping, playing, irregular food choices frequently affect the renal system and so on. As a side effect of these, the testicles receive some water. This water deposit is very harmful as it reduces the human productivity. A small increase in the size and shape of testicle can have serious consequences and long-term effects.

Again, it is tough to figure out by ordinary people. If you get your boy circumcised as soon as possible, you secure your dynastic future and better reproductive cycle for your boy. Many people do not know this and many religions have not yet revealed this. This is unfortunate. However, for your kid's sake you should go for it immediately. There is no better option, so start following them than it is too late.
